The Tylosaurus was a fearsome marine reptile that dominated the seas during the Late Cretaceous. With its long body and fish-like tail, it powered through the water with sweeping motions. At an impressive 46 feet long, it was about the size of a humpback whale, making it one of the largest mosasaurs to ever live in the Western Interior Seaway of North America around 75 to 85 million years ago.
History: The first Tylosaurus remains were discovered in the 1860s, following the American Civil War. In 1869, Edward Drinker Cope initially described the creature as Macrosaurus proriger. A year later, Othniel Charles Marsh, Cope’s rival, led expeditions that uncovered additional fossils of this giant marine lizard. In 1872, Marsh named it Tylosaurus, which means “knob (or snout) lizard,” in reference to its unique elongated bony muzzle.
Scientific Name: Tylosaurus proriger
Our Tylosaurus figurine accurately depicts this ancient predator’s streamlined body, large skull, and sharp conical teeth. The figure even features extra rows of teeth on the roof of its mouth, which helped it hold struggling prey, just like the real creature. You can even spot these teeth in the model’s throat. With broad, flattened flippers and a long tail likely ending in an expanded lobe for added thrust, this figure brings the mighty Tylosaurus to life.
