Smilodon, better known as the sabre-toothed cat, was a powerful and muscular feline with massive, dagger-like fangs. Known from thousands of skeletons discovered at the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits in California, Smilodon roamed North and South America before becoming extinct about 12,000 years ago.
History: During the Pleistocene Epoch, natural oil seeps at the Rancho La Brea site formed dangerous tar pits that trapped unwary animals such as elephants and horses. As these animals struggled, Smilodon fatalis—the fearsome sabre-toothed predator—was drawn to the area, only to become trapped as well. Today, thousands of Smilodon skeletons have been found preserved in these tar pits.
