Pteranodon was a striking pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous Period, around 85 million years ago. While often associated with dinosaurs, pterosaurs were actually a distinct group of flying reptiles. Unlike birds and some dinosaurs, they didn’t have feathers but were instead covered with pycnofibers, hair-like structures.
History:
Pteranodon made history as the first pterosaur discovered in the United States and the first to be found outside of Europe. Before its discovery, all known pterosaurs had teeth. The lack of teeth in Pteranodon marked an important distinction in the scientific understanding of these ancient creatures. Its distinctive crest varied greatly among different specimens, suggesting it was used more for display purposes than for any practical function.
