Located southwest of Medora, this site memorializes the life and activities in North Dakota of Antoine de Vallombrosa, the Marquis de Mores, who arrived in 1883.
When touring Medora, you’ll travel through time at the elegant home of the town’s namesake. In 1883, Antoine de Vallombrosa, known as the Marquis de Morès, and his wife, Medora, arrived in the Badlands. Within six months, they built the Chateau as a summer hunting retreat, founded the town, began a beef-shipping business, and the Marquis was accused of murder! Visit their house, filled with mostly original furnishings, and the Interpretive Center nearby to learn about their lives and Wild West adventures.
Just down the road at Chimney Park, view an 85-foot-tall chimney and other remnants from the Marquis’ failed effort to package and ship chilled beef across the country. Downtown, stroll through the charming De Morès Memorial Park and snap a selfie with a 1926 statue of the Marquis.
