This German-Russian homestead, birthplace of legendary television bandleader and musician Lawrence Welk, illustrates the history of family farming in North Dakota.
Tour the 6-acre grounds, including the original farmhouse, Sommerküche (summer kitchen), outhouse, granary, and buggy house. The barn was moved here in about 1949, and the blacksmith shop is a reconstruction of the original.
Step into the farmyard and walk into a bygone era. Learn about the realities of farm life and the Welk family, who lived here from 1894 to 1965. Lawrence Welk, one of the wealthiest entertainers in show business at the time of his death in 1992, credited much of his success to the values he learned on the farm. The long-syndicated “Lawrence Welk Show” still airs on PBS.
