Brachiosaurus, one of the tallest of the long-necked dinosaurs, roamed North America during the Late Jurassic Period, about 153 million years ago. While this toy is much smaller than the real thing, it is packed with incredible details to capture the essence of this giant herbivore.
History:
The first partial skeleton of Brachiosaurus was unearthed during a 1900 expedition led by the Field Columbian Museum in Colorado, USA. In 1903, American paleontologist Elmer Riggs officially named the species Brachiosaurus altithorax. After the fossil was carefully prepared, Riggs provided further descriptions of this majestic creature in 1904.
Scientific Name:
Brachiosaurus altithorax
Characteristics:
Known for its towering neck, Brachiosaurus had a small skull in proportion to its immense body. It fed on vegetation, using its simple peg-like teeth to strip leaves from trees. This plant eater stood out with front legs longer than its hind legs, giving it a sloping back. Its large front feet had a single claw on the thumb, while its strong hind feet had five toes. It is estimated that Brachiosaurus reached lengths over 80 feet.
Size:
This highly detailed Brachiosaurus toy measures 13 inches long and 8 inches high, making it a striking addition to any prehistoric collection.
