These five articles were originally presented at the symposium given Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Williston State College, Williston, North Dakota. Entitled "At the Confluence: Now and Then," the symposium featured Dr. John Logan Allen, Dr. John Matzko, Dr. Mark Harvey, Carla Kelly, and Dr. Greg Camp presenting their research about human, natural, political, and geographical history of the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers to members of the public, teachers, and fellow historians and researchers. Highlighted at the confluence symposium were some of the primary or eyewitness documents these researchers used in preparing their papers. Excerpts of some of the primary documents are reprinted, along with annotations describing the documents' significance. To help decipher the handwritten documents, transcripts were made and included. Teachers attending the first day of the symposium, June 28, battled record-breaking heat while participating in hands-on activities that gave them a taste of what life was like at a frontier military post.
