Ankylosaurus was the armored tank of the dinosaur era, weighing up to 13,000 lbs. and covered in thick, bony armor. Its name, meaning “fused lizard,” refers to the fused bones in its skull and body, making it an incredibly tough and resilient dinosaur. With its tail club as a defense mechanism, this formidable creature would have made even the most fearsome predators think twice before attacking.

History: The first Ankylosaurus fossils were discovered in 1906 by paleontologist Barnum Brown in Montana. Brown's initial reconstruction missed the characteristic tail club and mistakenly arranged the dinosaur's protective armor plates in parallel rows. Over time, additional fossils revealed the iconic tail club and varying shapes and sizes of osteoderms (the bony plates). It wasn't until 2004, when Kenneth Carpenter undertook a detailed study, that Ankylosaurus was fully described.
